Which is a Better Source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids Fish Oil or Flax Seed Meal

Flax is commonly recommended as a source high in omega 3 fatty acids, however is it an efficient source of bio-available omega 3 fatty acids

The short answer, without question is fish oil. We have found better results treating dry eye syndrome by eliminating the flax seed oil and greatly increasing the EPA and DHA (we like 2000 mg to 3000 mg of EPA and DHA combined). Flax seed oil is very unstable and thus has a short shelf life at room temperature. Flax seed oil also does not contain omega 3 fatty acids, instead our bodies must convert the ALA (alpha linolenic acid) contained within the flax seed into the omega 3 fatty acids that can then be used by our bodies. Another disadvantage to flax seed oil is that our body’s conversion of flax seed oil to EPA or DHA is very inefficient.

The conversion ALA to EPA/DHA rate has been reported to be between 4% and 15% (worse for DHA than EPA and lower for men than women). A person’s conversion rate can vary based on many factors. Therefore, fish is a much better as well as a more efficient source of omega 3 fatty acids.

Our Recommendation

At Total Eye Care we recommend Dry Eye Advantage for patients suffering from dry eye syndrome and Eye Advantage for patients with macular degeneration, both of which are available via our office or mail order. The dosage is 2 capsules twice a day which will provide approximately 2200mg of omega 3 fatty acids. For patients with severe dry eye symptoms they take 2 capsules three times a day with meals.

We have done the leg work on finding a cost effective source of fish oil capsules. You can purchase Omega 3 capsules online from Total Eye Care  specifically formulated for dry eye syndrome and macular degeneration. You will be taken to our partner website PRN Omega Health or you can call our office (817.416.0333).

Now that we know this does flax have a role in the treatment of dry eye syndrome?
